BREAKING NEWS: Medtronic & Cornerstone Robotics in $700 Million team up

Massive industry news today as surgical leader Medtronic has announced a strategic partnership with Chinese based Cornerstone robotics to commercialise their Sentire soft Tissue robotic system. And a massive investment of $700 Million. That is a lot of money !!!

Why is this massive news?
Firstly it places Medtronic firmly as a company that can now offer two of the most popular formats in robotic surgery - The HUGO RAS cart based system with open console as well as, now, the Boom based system that is like the well loved Intuitive da Vinci.
$700 Million is serious and I mean serious wonga. That is a BIG signal !!!!!!! The market is already segmenting with two preferences coming out - Boom like systems such as the Intuitive da Vinci Xi or Da Vinci 5... but also alternative formats such as cart based (CMR Versius, HUGO RAS, SSi Mantra) or the yet to be proven table integrated system like Johnson& Johnson Ottava.
Medtronic have been clear that they will keep pushing HUGO for those surgeons that want that format - BUT will now offer an alternative to the half of the market that want the boom architecture. Smart move - listening to customers in my opinion. It also leans into a few other things. Firstly it is a step into China where via Hong Kong Cornerstone resides. Next it is an option now for a closed / emersive console system with Sentire - and an open console with HUGO RAS. Again allowing a choice for users. Hear my full video here on what I think this means for the surgical robotics industry.
But what does tbis mean for competiton. Well, to me it says a few things. We have seen companies like Microport gain success with their da Vinci Clone technology - placing over 300 systems in 18 months. So it is clear that a format like this is a credible alternative to the da Vinci. But now you have Medtronic's massive muscle behind the Sentire system - and that is a very different proposal. Contracting - open surgery - manual lap and now two robotics offerings - starts to look like a major step up in the might that they can bring. Da Vinci clones have been a threat to Intuitive - but this perhaps has far more over arching conotations. Without doubt it will make Medtronic much more competitive in China and parts of Asia. And - depending on how they price the offering - it could make them a strong competitor in Europe and Latin America. This comes as a strategic impact to Johnson & Johnson and their OTTAVA that recently launched at SRS 2026. It now offers an alternatic the their inverse boom format - table integration. They too have seen that offering alternatives may be the future as their recent announcement to collaborate with Ronovo and Carina puts out there. Howvere that is one closed console system with another. Yes Bed and cart offering being different. But it doesn't give what many users are asking - "Give me a da Vinci style system please." This move by Medtronic with Cornerstone robotics does exactly that.
I believe this is a super healthy signal that we could have better competition in the soft tissue robotics space.
